This week in Biomed, we continued working on our Capstone and Malady presentations, but also had the chance to meet with Mrs. Hammons, and perform a skills lab on Friday.

Talking with Mrs. Hammons was a very refreshing experience. After we talked about what I am passionate about and why I chose specifically healthcare law, we started to nit-pick my presentation so far. Mrs. Hammons helped to figure out how I wanted to begin and end my presentation. Although we struggled with the exact words to say, we moved a picture of Britney Spears to the very beginning and we may start it with something like “In 2008 Britney went to the hospital. Three years later, she sued that same hospital and 6 workers were fired.” Moving her picture to the front gets everyone hooked on why a random celebrity is the cover of my presentation, and it lets me use her case as an example. The ending is the very tricky part that we still aren’t sure on.

For my Circus Malady presentation, I chose Polymelia. Polymelia is a rare congenital disorder where a person has extra limbs. These limbs are often underdeveloped and nonfunctional. Polymelia can result from genetic anomalies or incomplete twin separation.

Some cases occur due to environmental factors affecting fetal development. Sometimes, an incomplete twin merges with the main fetus, leaving extra limbs. Genetic mutations can interfere with normal limb development. Exposure to certain toxins during pregnancy may also play a role. I am very not excited to present this due to the fact that most of the information must be memorized.
