This week, we have been preparing for our HEENT lab. Before we began all that, we worked on looking at the roots of medical terms and finding the meaning. In doing this, it will be easier to break down more complicated terms by their root and help give us some context. When we come back to the topic of HEENT, we learned how we would be conducting our lab. HEENT stands for Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat; Each part of the body that will be examined thoroughly. We did this by watching the exam and taking notes that we could use for the exam.

For my own knowledge, I was examined by Kennedie then processed to examine Rowan.

We began with the head and inspected the scalp. Then we palpated it to feel for any unusual lumps or asymmetry. Then, we proceed to the eyes. This is to look for any unusual red or yellowness in the eye that could be signs of internal diseases. Inspect sclera and conjunctiva of each eye; sclerae should be white and clear. Inspect each cornea, iris, and lens, checking for transparency. Compare the pupils and test each reaction to light; Pupils are normally round and vary in size. Test for reactivity to light. To do this, darken the room and shine a flashlight on each pupil. Normally, pupils constrict with light and dilate in the dark. Last is the ears, nose, and throat. In the ears, you want to check for clear hearing and ensuring theres no soreness physcially for them. The nose, is more concerning sinus. Last, the throat is everything to do with the mouth. This includes the gums, teeth, etc.
