As we have continued our research for our capstone projects, my knowledge of Healthcare Law has immensely grown. So far in my paper I have focused on the origins of the topic as well as technology that has helped benefit this field of law. While the knowledge is easy obtain, finding a mentor/ someone to shadow has not been. Shadowing a court case or a following a lawyer along is a very difficult task because of their full schedules and constant traveling in order to aid their client. Most potential mentors have their hands too full to be able to help assist a high school student. I have to prioritize my paper in class the most, spending my time wisely.
As the week continued, our class worked on our escape room. Our scenario is an urgent infection control situation involving a patient diagnosed with Clostridioides difficile (C. diff). The mission is to follow Springhill Medical Center's safety guidelines to protect yourselves, other patients, and the hospital environment from contamination. To escape the room, you must retrieve the necessary information and apply the correct protocols, all while maintaining HIPAA compliance with a time is limited of 30 minutes! Our class piggybacked on the other classes clues by adding: Locate and Don PPE
A note on a clipboard with PPE symbols, showing a checklist of items needed for C. diff containment.
Multiple PPE options (gloves, gowns, masks, face shields) hang by a door. Only specific items (e.g., gloves, gowns, face shields) are required for contact precautions. Using the checklist, players select and don the necessary PPE. Incorrect PPE selection adds a time penalty.
Puzzle: Small pieces with different images of handwashing steps (e.g., applying soap, scrubbing, rinsing) scattered around the room.
Players need to find and arrange the images in the correct handwashing sequence.
Once the sequence is completed, they see a message, “Don’t forget – use soap, not hand sanitizer,” directing them to the sink for handwashing after patient contact.
I think it will be interesting to set up, maybe somewhat hard, but over very enjoyable.
