Ronny & Tina

This week in biomed, we got the amazing news that we would be traveling to St,James Episcopal Elementary in Fairhope to teach the kids about germs. In preparation for this, we had arts and crafts set up in the biomed room throughout the week. Most of us doubled up and made each of our own germs to sho the kids. My germs name was Tina (on the right) and she was made by myself and Kennedie. To the left is her boyfriend, Ronny, made by Rowan and Hannah. We put them together with simple popsicle sticks, cut up colored paper, then glued eyes, pieces of yarn, etc. to their face.

Once we arrived to St,James, we were taken to their classrooms. Not only did we get to show them our cool germs, we also presented a slideshow quizzing and teaching them how to wash their hands, what a germ was, and even what song to sing to make sure you've been washing long enough. My favorite part of this experience had to be singing happy birthday (twice) to Ronny and Tina.

achoooo!

Then, after our presentation we showed the kids just how nasty and far their sneezes could travel. To do this, we had light blue paper on the floor and we would get the kids to sit down beside us and fake sneeze as hard as they could while we sprayed water onto the paper. I think this had to be their favorite part.

After we we were done, they finally got to work on their own. While we helped the kids make their own germs (and name them) we also took trips with small groups to the bathroom where we put lotion with glitter mixed n to act as pretend germs, so we could show that you can't just wipe your hands off with a towel to get the germs off, you have to really wash your hands with cold water and soap while singing happy birthday twice!
