Pharmacy vs Phramacology (10/25)

w/ Mary Paige Martin

Ms.Martin graduated in 2014 from St.Luke's and attended Samford from 2014 to 2018. She was once a biomed student and shadowed the fields of PT and Pharmacy. She quickly decided PT was not for her after listening to the crackling and popping of one of the patients bones. She is now in her 4th year of pharmacy (4.5/8 rotations).

"Even if it doesn't work out the way you think it should, it

doesn't mean you can't do it. You need to find the path

that works for you" - MPM

Pharmacy is the science or practic of preperation and dispensing medical drugs. This practice applies to each and every patient that you could potentially come into contact with. Each and every prescription you fill it must be safe and effective.

Pharmacology is the study of the effects that drugs have on/in the body. This includes how drugs work, what side effects they could cause, what the drug is preventing from happening, and what the drug is allowing to happen.

The interview process for Mary Paige was very different between both programs. After applying you will receive an email letting you know you received an interview. On the dsy of, there are many questions and even more information provided. You may have to write an essay and will be interviewed by at least one faculty member.

For Mary Paige, her classes started from eight till eleven, lunch break, then classes again from one to four. She had a lab once a week that lasted about two hours.

Her 4th year has been the most challenging so far. She has been putting everything she's learned into real life cases. She has completed two primary cases, a community case, health system rotation, and is currently on an academia rotation. Now, she has a community rotation and two medicine rotations left to complete

The only pharmacy schools in the state are Auburn and Samford University. There are several things required for the program including a PCAT, certain GPA requirements, appropriate courses completed with satisfactory grade, and complete Pharm.D.Application on thepharmcas.org. Some Pharmacy jobs include in the hospital, infusion, compounding, primary care, academia, management, insurance companies, and drug investigation / research.
