The Placebo Effect (3/8/23)

By Jarnae Harris

Jarnae is a senior at St.Luke's and is representing her slideshow to us for her Biomed Interventions class.

The Placebo Effect is a phenomenon in which people display signs of real improvement from receiving a placebo treatment. It creates a stronger connection between the brain and body.

On the other hand, there is the Nocebo Effect. This is the opposite of the one above and occurs when there is a negative outcome from a placebo treatment. It is a result of negative beliefs prior to treatment and can be life-threatening.

Placebo's work because it creates increases activity in the area called the Rostral Ventromedial Medulla, which is responsible for relaying pain information.

This effect is very popular in marketing tactics. Depending on things such as name brands or packaging, people may taste different things. To give us a real life experience, we were given a pink, blue, and yellow cup. After tasting each cup, I would label the cups to Yellow, Pink, then Blue (from most to least expensive). The actual result was Blue, Yellow, and Pink.
